Must-Try Life-Changing 5 AM Morning Routine Checklist

Maybe you hit the snooze button several times before finally dragging yourself out of bed. Or maybe you just don’t like the idea of getting up before the sun. Or maybe you spent hours in bed doomscrolling on TikTok and slept at 3 am.

Whatever the reason, once you finally get up, you start rushing everything. You spend the day regretting waking up late, and, worse, you feel overwhelmed and stressed throughout the day.

I know all this because that was me. I am a night owl and completely loved sleeping in. Then I realized I had almost no time for myself in the morning, so I decided to try to become a morning person.

And yes, the first few days were completely terrible. But it was worth it.

S, I know, you’re probably a night owl and can’t picture yourself ever becoming a morning person. And I totally get it. But you should totally try to become a morning person.

You’ll struggle for some time as the body adjusts. But once you pick, you’ll absolutely love it.

I don’t regret disrupting my sleep at 5 AM. My morning routine has practically changed my life. And I desire for you to experience a similar transformation and be your best self yet.

Why Try a 5 AM Morning Routine?

It’s straightforward. Waking up at 5 AM means you have more hours to accomplish everything you need to do to feel fulfilled by the time your head hits the pillow at night.

It gives you a block of time before the world needs anything from you.

This means:

  • More productivity. You start working when the brain is still alert.
  • You create a healthy lifestyle. Getting up at 5 AM means you have enough time to meditate, exercise, journal, and even meal prep.
  • You get your “me-time”. No kids, colleagues, or life partner. Just some quality time with yourself.
  • You sleep better every night
  • You stay focused since you have enough time to plan your day
  • Less stress, when you’re not rushing, the day feels less stressful.
  • Get more things done
  • You become happier and more positive

Okay, First Things First, the Sleep Math

Before we get into our 5 AM morning routine checklist, it is important to recognize that you must get enough sleep to wake up energized at 5 AM.

A 5 AM wake-up cannot happen if you’re barely getting enough sleep. Most adults need at least 7 hours of sleep every night, according to major sleep organizations such as the CDC and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

So work your sleep schedule backward:

If the target is 7 hours, be asleep by 10 PM and in bed by 9:45 to give your body 15 minutes to fall asleep.

If the target is 8 hours, be asleep by 9 PM and in bed by 8:45.

However, please note, if you’re used to sleeping at 1 or 2 AM, don’t jump straight to 10 PM. Move your bedtime earlier by 15 to 30 minutes every few days.

The Life-changing 5 AM Morning Routine Checklist

1. Resist the snooze button

It’s tempting. I used to snooze my buzzer several times before finally dragging myself out of bed, cranky and angry at the world. So, I’d advise against hitting that snooze button. I know your body is not yet adjusted, but snoozing will definitely make things worse. You’ll feel more tired and miserable, cranky, and less motivated.

If you’re really struggling, keep your phone or alarm clock across the room. This works like magic. You have to move to physically stop that noisy thing. As you walk, your system gradually registers that it is time to wake up.

How can you help your body adjust? Go to bed early. Having a peaceful bedtime should be your priority. It really sets you up for a successful tomorrow. And the good thing is, you’ll fall asleep much faster because you’ve been awake for many hours. You can also create a relaxing, dedicated bedtime routine that will help you fall asleep much faster and include things like journaling, meditating, and taking a magnesium glycinate supplement.

2. Hydrate

I know you love your morning coffee. We all do, especially during those slow mornings when you feel like you need coffee to actually “wake your system up.” But if you can, reach out for a glass of water first. Rehydration at 5 AM makes a huge difference. It wakes up your gut and works on your system. It makes that foggy feeling disappear almost instantly.

It’s not just water, but it’s the fuel that runs your energy, mood, and attention, and literally everything in your system. According to Research, drinking warm water in the morning enhances blood circulation and relaxes your muscles. Proper hydration is some kind of power that reawakens and prepares you to face the day. It’s also a detox drink that flushes out toxins from your stomach. You see, it’s a no-brainer.

A simple hack? Place a bottle of water next to your phone or alarm clock. This way, you drink water within the first five minutes of waking up. You should be done with hydration by 5:05 AM. Grab your bottle as you turn off the buzzer.

3. Make that bed

Sounds simple, but a rumpled bed looks so so inviting. You may just start convincing yourself to get back and snuggle up inside the unkempt covers for just a few minutes. But this two-minute activity is a life-changer for someone who naturally is a late riser.

Completing this task marks your first accomplishment of the day. Your brain is now prepared for more wins. And guess what? Your system realizes that it’s now awake and should keep going to achieve more.

And the easiest way to do your bed? Reduce the bedding. You see those nice 8 decorative pillows you have? You can do with 4. Also, ditch that comforter for a duvet. The goal should be to have simple bedding that is, of course, comfortable, but won’t take you long to make. A neat bed disrupts the thought of sliding back in.

4. Meditation and a simple workout

I just realized the other day that I have a favorite sitting spot in my bedroom. I just enjoy sitting there gazing into space for a few minutes. You can try the same.

How to meditate? Identify a comfortable spot. Not necessarily within the bedroom. Take a few minutes, around five, to just breathe. Focusing on your breath. When distractions occur, and they’re always there, try to gently redirect your attention to your breath. Your goal should be to stay calm. Meditation at 5 AM clears brain chatter and helps you stay productive.

5. Move Your Body

Try a short workout. It could be as simple as light stretching, including things like neck rolls, hip openers, a forward fold, or a cat-cow stretch. Stretching works on sluggishness, leaving you feeling motivated, powerful, and strong.

You can then graduate to an abs workout and jogging after a few days.

6. Gratitude walk

Step outside, or, if you feel it’s too early or too cold, walk around the house. Breathe deeply and just look around. Appreciate nature, the fresh air, chirping birds, and things around the house if you’re indoors.

It’s a simple activity, but it helps you feel at ease as you start the day.

7. Do Some Journaling

I use a simple journal with gratitude prompts. I know your body may not be willing to take part in the appreciation. Do you know how it feels to sabotage your sweet sleep? But try forcing yourself.

A simple hack? Use a traditional notebook. I tried a digital app, but I forgot about it after four days. Place your notebook near your favorite spot. Write how you feel. Be honest with yourself. It can be as simple as “The omelet made my breakfast delicious and fulfilling.” Your aim should be to feel more thankful. Journaling increases positivity and happiness. It creates a mental shift that builds resilience and moves you through the day. So, be consistent. Those five minutes of journaling rewire your brain to start spotting all the good stuff in your life.

8. Shower

You’ve done some exercising or light stretching. You need to shower to feel fresh. It will feel odd and very uncomfortable at first, especially if you’re a night owl.

But it’s good practice and should be a must-do in everybody’s morning routine, even if you work from home or are a stay-at-home mom. Morning showers wake up your brain and make you feel ready for the day’s activities.

9. Skincare is a must

Time to lock in moisture in your skin. You don’t need a million products for radiant skin. Overdoing it might actually be a bad thing. You only need like three or four solid ingredients in your morning skincare routine. A good cleanser, a good serum, a moisturizer, and SPF. Simple and effective.

I am on the tretinoin-Azelaic acid combo, and I use my 10% Anua Azelaic acid every morning.

And please, don’t make excuses. Your aim should be to take care of yourself, regardless of how much time you have.

10. Take a protein-rich breakfast

This serves as the icing on our 5 AM morning routine cake. You’ve already prepared your gut with warm lemon water; you’ve earned your shower time after working out and meditating, and your skin now feels its best to start the day.

You now need the energy to deal with whatever the day throws at you. And a healthy, protein-rich breakfast fuels your body.

And there are so many good quality options. Eggs are a classic high-protein breakfast food and for good reason. You can make scrambled eggs with veggies, boiled eggs, or your favorite omelet. Or you can grab a protein smoothie. Or my favorite plain Greek yoghurt with chopped almonds and raspberries.

Protein fuels and repairs your body, keeps you full for longer, eliminates unhealthy cravings, and reduces brain fog. According to extensive research, a protein-filled breakfast slows digestion, stabilizing blood sugar, which provides steady energy for a productive day.

How to Stick to a 5 AM Morning Routine

Do a 3-week ramp-up.

The first week will be the hardest, and unfortunately, a lot of people quit then because they try everything at once.

Do this instead;

  • Week 1: Do the bare minimum. Wake up, turn off the alarm, drink water, and shower.
  • Week 2: Add simple wins in week 2. Make your bed, stretch, and journal for five minutes.
  • Week 3: Actually fill in the rest. Add meditation, the gratitude walk, and a proper breakfast.

5 AM Morning Routine Checklist FAQ

Can I do my 5 AM morning routine on weekends?

Yes. Ideally, you want to keep your wake-up time consistent. Keep it within an hour or so of your weekday time. Big swings can mess with your sleep schedule, making it harder to be consistent.

What if I’m just not a morning person

That’s understandable. Some people are biologically wired towards later schedules. If you really are miserable after a month of honest, consistent effort, and at least 7 hours of sleep, try 6 or 6:30 AM. The most important part of all this is actually the routine, not the time.

Do I need to do all 10 steps?

No, pick the ones that matter the most to you and slowly build from there.

Final Thoughts

The first week of the 5 AM morning routine will be tough. You’ll be tempted to quit. The first few days were absolutely terrible for me.

But be deliberate and consider your 5 AM morning routine your must-have toolkit.

Start small. Your goal is to choose habits that calm your nerves and motivate you to move. You can just get up, turn off your alarm, drink your water, and just shower. Then, the following week, you can add a few more steps. Introduce the remaining steps in the third week.

And, yes, accept there are days when you won’t be able to do it.

Just be resilient enough to pick up again the next day. Just keep showing up.

This way, everything becomes a habit rather than a chore.

So, are you ready for the transformation? Set that alarm and go to bed early.
